The Cannonball XY GT
An incredible Ford Falcon XY GT ‘Replica’, which ran in the infamous 1994 Cannonball Run through the Northern Territory, has been freshly restored by the team at Gibson Motorsport.
After running in that one-off event, the mighty Falcon sat in storage for many years before coming out of hibernation with a Sydney-based owner.
The story goes that this particular Falcon was born a GT, however the chassis had to be reshelled after an accident, with the body of a Falcon 500. Nevertheless the GT underpinnings remained.
The current owner acquired the vehicle in 2013, removing the race stickers and sending it to Gibson Motorsport for a complete overhaul in early-2014.
The complete mechanical package, including engine, gearbox and differential, was rebuilt in-house by GMS mechanics and items such as the exhaust and long-range 36-gallon fuel tank were renewed. New dash padding, steering wheel and carpets were also fitted. The engine also gained an electronic distributor for added convenience.
While the body and driveline work was being completed the body received a repaint.
With everything polished up and put back together, Fred Gibson himself was on-hand to see the Falcon’s keys to its new owner, who drove it back to Queensland with no issues… and achieved 18mpg from its mighty 351ci Cleveland V8!
Gibson Motorsport looks forward to hearing more about this iconic Aussie Muscle Car’s escapades for another 45 years.
